Can anyone sing?
YES anyone can sing! Singing is an extension of the speaking voice and with proper instruction and technique you can have a voice that sings well. Vocal cords are like muscles and with proper training you can get a lot more out of them. The exception to that rule is if a person has been diagnosed with ‘tone deafness’ which is very rare and unlikely in the majority of students.
How long will it take me to be able to sing?
For each person the length of time it takes to be able to sing well varies. After commencing lessons most students begin to sing better after as little as two lessons. All skills can be refined and improved, even the greatest singers continue to have vocal training to maintain their ability well into their professional careers. Vocal training is similar to fitness training, you need to keep working at it in order to improve and build on the abilities you have.
How many lessons do I need to have and at what frequency?
Most students will have weekly lessons initially. Half hour lessons are the minimum requirement to begin to train as a singer. Hour lessons weekly can be more effective for a student who wants to see significant change each month. We recommend students ‘vocalise’ (practise scales) on CD provided during the week as well. How often you practise is proportional to how much you improve.
Can you be too young or too old to sing?
If a student can understand the music, they can work to improve their energy and control - thus becoming more able to accomplish their goals. You are never too young or too old to sing!..
I want to sound like my favourite artist, is that possible?
To some degree yes. Students who tend to spend a lot of time listening to the one style and the one artist can tend to sound similar to that artist. However, caution must be taken when attempting to sound like your favourite singer – you may be placing undue stress or producing awkward vocal placements in order to produce these sounds which is counterproductive to developing a strong healthy balanced voice. It is preferred that you train in a way that makes the most out of your natural vocal sound and then work toward styling your vocal approach toward the genre of music you enjoy.
Are singers born with the gift to sing ? Some certainly are more gifted than others, but as long as you can speak and are not tone deaf, you can sing. The music world is filled with diverse voices ranging from a Bob Dylan to a Pavarotti. Would we not have missed one if he had decided not to sing because he did not sound like the other?
Sometimes I lose my voice, can singing lessons solve that problem?
There are a number of reasons why this can occur. One of them can be through improper vocal placement and overuse. The best option for you is to have a vocal assessment with us for some advice. Generally these problems can be solved through vocalizing correctly and practicing better vocal placement, however if we feel there may be some underlying issues we will refer you to a specialist for advice.
I want to have lessons but I'm too nervous to sing in front of anyone! Any suggestions?
Most of us are nervous about singing in front of other people, the good news is, as soon as you begin to gain confidence in your ability through having lessons the easier it will become. No one wants to open their mouth to sing and not know what sound is going to come out! If you start to understand how to use your voice correctly some of that nervousness will disappear..... but not all of it! - we need a little bit of nervous energy to give us the vitality to express and present a song to our audience so don't hate the butterflies! Embrace them!
